During the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, Formula 1 witnessed the introduction, for a single race, of one of the most original innovations in its history. The Brabham BT 46B, nicknamed 'Fan Car', was a modified version of the standard BT 46 Alfa Romeo 12. It featured an impressive fan at the rear which channeled air through the engine radiator before beefing up a version optimized ground effect, initially developed by the Lotus 79. This generated exceptional downforce, allowing Niki Lauda to take a significant lead from the first moments of the race.
