The Kubelwagen, a mythical car of the Second World War
The Kübelwagen Type 82 was a light military vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built by Volkswagen during the First World War for military use. It was the AXIS equivalent of the "Jeep"although the production of over 50,000 units that ended in 1945 was far lower than that of its famous Allied counterpart (over 650,000).
Simple, reliable, robust and equipped with good off-road performancecost-effective and designed for mass production, the Volkswagen Kübelwagen was a liaison, staff and reconnaissance vehicle, as well as a versatile battlefield utility.
The Kübelwagen was simplicity itself. With a powerful two-wheel drive configuration for tackling snow, ice and mud, the vehicle's prowess surprised even its creators. In some tests, it even showed superior handling than some 4x4s. This was due to the combination of a lightweight chassis and a smooth, flat underbody that "surfed" over soft surfaces like a motorized sled, enabling it to keep up with tracked vehicles without too much trouble.
The Kübelwagen could reach a top speed of around 80 km/h thanks to its 985 cm3 4-cylinder engine, and featured a self-locking differential to maintain good traction in all circumstances. Thanks to a integrated cooling systemno radiator was required, making it less vulnerable to bullets, while remaining highly tolerant of both hot and cold climates.
A superb reproduction Roc Hobby at 1/12 scale
After presenting the Jeep of the Allies, it was only right to offer the equivalent of the AXE in the form of a Kübelwagen Type 82 in 1/12 scale. The rear-mounted engine and air-cooled engine has been faithfully recreated to reflect the original, an engine that lasted 65 years in VW's classic Beetle and whose production finally ceased in Mexico in 2003. Everything is restored in the 1/12 model, so you can see the blades turning in the fan when the engine is running. On the radio-controlled model, ROC Hobby has designed a 2-speed to simulate the 1st and 3rd gears of a real car. It is possible to switch between the modes 4WD and RWD. This function of shifting gears via a single button on the transmitter is perfectly reproduced on the model to offer greater control when driving off-road.
The radio-controlled model is mounted on a solid chassis with a central column for high torsional strength, which also houses the central drive shaft and electrical wiring. The front and rear wheels have a independent suspensionfor long wheel travel in a compact footprint.
The R&D team at Roc Hobby R&D team spent a great deal of time on the car's bodywork to reproduce it in detail. You can see the Bosc horn and headlightsh horn and Notek camouflage lights. Tires are the most common 5.25×16. Like the real car, the simulated wheels must be secured with 5 screws, with a spare installed on the front hood, ready for use if needed. Remove the spare wheel and the typical mid-cycle spare wheel holder is easily accessible. The windshield can be lowered and fixed to the front bracket, and the rearview mirror angle is adjustable just like on the real car. The qhe four doors open by turning the door handle. Seats feature comfortable soft foam cushions.
