Comment choisir mon Crawler ?

Among the many car models available in RC modeling, crawlers are those that are currently the most successful. With impressive crossing capacity and an impressive number of options, chassis configurations, customization parts and accessories , it's easy to understand the excitement they generate. A buying guide is essential, which is why we will detail all aspects of crawling in this article.

What is a Crawler?

Crawlers are rather slow RC vehicles designed for overcoming obstacles and uneven terrain on which other cars cannot navigate. Over the years, the crawler has become one of the most popular cars in the world of RC car modeling. Crawlers have become very diversified and include “Scales Crawler”, “Technical crawlers” and “Rock racers”. These are perfect vehicles for riders who prefer to adventure outdoors in rocky and difficult terrain .

The different types of Crawler

The Scale Crawler

Scale Crawlers focus on aesthetics. These are magnificent scale models, extremely detailed and realistic . The proportions and size of the wheels are close to life-size off-road cars like 4x4s for example. In short, real motorized models for operating outdoors, on uneven terrain!

The Technical Crawler

Technical Crawlers are relatively slow and very technical vehicles, specialized in overcoming obstacles . Often equipped with monstrous wheels, they are perfect for tackling the most difficult terrain and meeting all challenges.

The Race Crawler

Race Crawlers are made for competition and racing. They are designed to deliver maximum power while overcoming most obstacles. These are the off-road vehicles for expert drivers!

The characteristics of the Crawler

Engine

You are going to need a good engine to be able to overcome all types of obstacles. Generally, crawlers are equipped with a brushed motor to be able to use engine braking and because they provide more torque. One of the few brushless motor combos is the Hobbywing Combo Xerun Ax .
The motor usually comes with two gears, a pinion and a ring gear. The gears are of different sizes to improve the torque of the motor , the larger the size of the ring gear, the more torque the motor will have.

Ground clearance

Ground clearance corresponds to the height of the chassis . As the crawler is a crossing vehicle , it is generally higher than other models so that your chassis does not come into contact with the ground. However, too high ground clearance risks causing the crawler to tip over when crossing obstacles. Therefore, the crawler requires perfect ground clearance balancing.

Tires and rims

The crawler's tires are large compared to other models because the larger the diameter of a tire, the greater its ability to overcome obstacles. They are flexible with deep sculptures. In addition, the tires and rims are glued together to withstand the stresses of the rock. The most common rim models are 1.9" (the most realistic size) for scale and 2.2" (more efficient but less aesthetic) for other models.

The suspensions

The crawlers have flexible suspensions so that they remain stable and the tires remain in contact with the ground when crossing obstacles. For improved durability, you may consider purchasing aluminum shock absorbers.

The steering servo

Crawlers require a high torque waterproof steering servo . Any servo with 20-30kg torque should be fine for regular practice.

Driving wheels

Crawlers are only available in four-wheel drive (4WD) because they offer better traction .

Differentials

Crawlers are also excellent all-terrain vehicles because the differentials are blocked, which prevents slipping , increases traction and crossing capabilities. Some models are even more versatile because they behave like classic all-terrain vehicles but the differentials can be locked remotely if necessary, such as the Traxxas TRX-4.

What are the Best Crawlers for Beginners?

The SCX10 II and Ascender Crawlers are excellent for beginners with astonishing performance on all surfaces and are available in RTR version, i.e. already assembled and complete . Axial and Vaterra offer many parts to customize, improve or repair them. The Redcat Everest 10 is a great performer and can be upgraded to become a great little truck.

There are many other Crawlers for beginners like the Traxxas TRX-4 , Gmade Komodo , Axial Wraith and Bomber and more!
